Biography

Eldest son of Sir Robert de Lawedre of Quarrelwood, etc., and later, of The Bass.

William was a Burgess[1] and Baillie [Magistrate] of Edinburgh.[2]

He had a charter in the reign of Robert III of the lands of Burrowmure in Edinburgh.[3]

"The Exchequer Rolls have preserved the fact that in 1342/3 William de Lawedr, senior, received a fee of £20 out of a certain benefice; and in the following year £10 was paid to 'William de Lawedir senior.' Again, in 1360 the accounts bear the name of William de Lawedre."[4][5]

Alan de Lawedre appeared in Parliament in 1368 as Procurator for William de Borthwick, and Alan's brother William "in villa de Edinburgh" is mentioned. [6]

In 1375 William de Lawedre was Custumar of Edinburgh [Exchequer Rolls] and another reference that during his tenure of the same office he had at one time Adam Forrester as his collegue, and that they had become bound for the balance of King David's ransom. William de Lawedre died either in 1375 or 1376, probably the latter, since for the arrears of his accounts of the year 1375, Alan de Lawedre became surety along with Forrester, the surviving Custumar.[7]

Alan de Lawedre succeeded his brother - "fratrem dicti Alani" - William de Lawedre in the lands of Boroughmuir. A subsequent charter of the same year (no.732) mentions some other land in the burgh of Edinburgh which had been held by William de Lawedre, all of which descended in the Lauder of Haltoun family for the next 300 years.[8]

Evidently William died v.p. and s.p.
